Story behind the block printing technique.
Printing of cottons were originally developed in Rajasthan during the medieval period of India. The seasons largely influenced the integration of the highly creative processes of weaving, spinning, dyeing and printing. Festivals also dictated this activity.
The earliest known example of block-printing is a copy of the Diamond Sutra from 868 A.D (currently in the British Museum). Even though the practice of block printing is probably about two thousand years old, trade in cotton cloth is said to have existed between India and Babylon from Buddha's time. Printed and woven cloths traveled to Indonesia, Malaya and the Far East. In the 17th century, Surat was established as a prominent center for export of painted and printed calicos, covering an extensive range in quality.
Sanganer is a town situated a few miles south-east of Jaipur city, India. Prior to the 17th century, there is no mention of Sanganer as a center of printing, though it's said to be 500 years old. Towards the end of the 17th century this art form became popular. Many craftsmen from neighboring state Gujarat, India migrated due to wars with Emperor Aurangzeb and the repeated invasions by the Marathas. By the end of the 18th century Sanganer fully developed into a handcrafted textile industry. It is popular for its Calico printed bed covers, quilts and saris. In Calico printing, the outlines are printed first and then the colours are filled in. Its bold patterns and colours are highly preferred.
Our Sanganeri collection is for women of today who is on the go. Someone who is free spirited and takes her own decisions. She is someone who loves to travel and never shy away from trying new things.
Mandalas are objects of devotion in Tantric Hindu and in Tantric Buddhism. They can be painted on paper, wood, stone, cloth or even on a wall. In some traditions, they can be reproduced in ephemeral material such as butter or colored sand. In some traditions like Tibetan Buddhism, the role of mandalas is so strong that it could become an architectural structure and even whole temples may be built as giant mandalas.
